How to fix networking after cloning an Ubuntu 8 VM

May 19th, 2009

Stolen from: http://weblog.jamisbuck.org/2008/8/15/cloning-ubuntu-hardy-image-in-vmware-fusion

* “sudo hostname blah”, to set the hostname. This doesn’t change it permanently, so you’ll also want to:
* “sudo vim /etc/hostname”. Change the contents of the file to the hostname you want. Then:
* “sudo vim /etc/hosts”. Replace all mentions of the old hostname with the new hostname.
* “sudo vim /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules”. There will be two entries in this file. The first points eth0 at the old MAC address, and the second points eth1 at the new. Go ahead and delete the first entry, and change “eth1” to “eth0” in the second (and now only) entry.
* “sudo shutdown -r now” to restart your virtual machine.

asinine espn bar management

April 29th, 2009

Hmmm … So, we went to the ESPN bar on the Boardwalk Disney in Orlando and expect just some typical bar food and a drink before going home and back to bed just after midnight last Thursday evening and we got probably the worst service ever.

The greeting we got something to the tune of there is no food service. You can only order drinks. At first, we were thinking about just leaving, but then decided what the heck. We might as well. So, one guy asks what some of the beers were. The waiter says, “it’s a beer”. He couldn’t give a better description for any of the beers! One guy orders a Jamison neat (no water, no ice). What’s is that? Shouldn’t you know if you’re a waiter? Oh well. No big deal.

I order the “Zone” drink, but asked for a shot of rum in in. I got the drink without rum in it. The person next to me ordered a milk shake. She got a drink with cream and shaved ice. Another guy ordered 2 drinks. He ordered the Zone and a beer. When he asked what kind of beers they were (menu just had names on it), the waiter responded with something like “it’s a beer.” When the drinks came, he just got the beer. When he asked for the waiter to get his other drink, the waiter said, “no, you didn’t [order the 2 drinks]” and he added that he couldn’t go back because the bar was closed and that the bartender was pissed that he even took the order.

When the check came, I was charged 6.50 for the rum. We called the waiter back and told him this and told him that there wasn’t rum and that he could taste it if he wanted to. He declined to taste it. He then brought his manager. The manager then argues with me and says that the recipe called for rum. The drink was special order – it wasn’t even on the menu! How could they have a recipe!?

The waiter said i should’ve told him there was a problem with my drink before the check came, but the bar was closed immediately after drinks were served! What was he going to do? Go back to the bar!? He told us that he couldn’t do that!

Later, the manager said that he was willing to take the drink off, but that we couldn’t tell him that he didn’t make the drink right while neither of them were willing to taste the drink.

They just took off the $6.50. They didn’t take off the whole drink like they said. They also charged an 18% gratuity as well!

So atop of that, we had to pay a very undeserved 18%!

The Evolve Showerhead WON’T save you an ounce of water!

April 25th, 2009

It’s not exactly a scam. It just won’t save you any water if you’re not the type that turns on the water and walks away. It must have either a timer or a temperature gauge (not sure which) that just slows the water down to drops after a little bit of time so that you can just go and flip the switch when you’re ready to go and shower. If you’re one that waits for the water to warm up in the shower, you will save no water whatsoever.

Picks for UFC 97: APRIL 18, 2009

April 18th, 2009

Fight card stolen from: http://www.mmaweekly.com/rumors.asp

UFC 97: APRIL 18, 2009
venue: Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada

Main Card Bouts:
-Anderson Silva (23-4; #1 Middleweight in the World)* vs. Thales Leites (14-1)

Anderson Silva. Thales Leites hasn’t beaten anyone significant enough for me to think that he can beat Silva and Silva has dominated his weight class. I don’t think he’s stoppable at this point. I really wonder how he was beat so many times in Japan!

-Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (17-3; #5 Light Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Chuck Liddell (21-6; #6 Light Heavyweight in the World)*

This will be an interesting one. Rua isn’t top 10 in a lot of people’s lists, but I think he ought to be. That said however, I’m not sure he can take a punch from Chucky. I think that Shogun can fight an intelligent fight and win, but I’d side more with Chuck.

I’m not that interested in the other fights.

-Luiz Cane (9-1) vs. Steve Cantwell (7-1)
-Cheick Kongo (13-4-1) vs. Antoni Hardonk (8-4)
-Brian Stann (6-1) vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (16-8-1)

Preliminary Bouts:
-Nathan Quarry (10-3) vs. Jason MacDonald (21-11)
-Denis Kang (31-11-1) vs. Xavier Fouka-Pokum (20-9)
-David Loiseau (18-8) vs. Ed Herman (16-7)
-T.J. Grant (13-2) vs. Ryo Chonan (15-9)
-Mark Bocek (6-2) vs. David Bielkheden (13-6)
-Matt Wiman (11-5) vs. Sam Stout (13-5-1)
-Eliot Marshall (7-3) vs. Vinny Magalhaes (6-4)

DSL Extreme really, really sucks…if your service goes out.

April 7th, 2009

Well, the service is great if it’s working. If you look at my hosting provider, it’s DSL Extreme. My service was down for almost the entire month of July because DSL Extreme technical support was incompetent enough to solve my problem. Their technical support was giving me the runaround and passing me off to billing and the left hand was totally not talking to the right. It was partially AT&T’s fault, but I was paying DSL Extreme, not AT&T and I couldn’t talk to AT&T directly.

Wednesday – call from billing saying it’s been disconnected and I should get an email for an activation date within 48 hours. Not the actual activation, but an activation date. Billing says that I won’t get credit for any of the down time because I lost line share and that I should be contacting AT&T for credit because it was them that disconnected my line and that it’s in the “Terms and Conditions” that I am supposed to have the line available the whole time. How do I know this is true? I didn’t lose dialtone myself. At least not that I’m aware of.
Here are a couple of typical technical support chat sessions:
Michelle:
Thank you for calling DSL Extreme. My name is Michelle. How may I help you?
uslacker99:
please check on the status of my service – Alton Yu 415-239-xxxx
Michelle:
Jsut a minute please
Michelle:
We finalized the disconnect on 7/15, it takes 5 days for the line to clear and then we can place the reconnect order
uslacker99:
I didn’t get an activation date
Michelle:
Is there anything else that I can help you with?
uslacker99:
Should I not have gotten an activation date?
Michelle:
We have not set the activation date yet
uslacker99:
I was told I should’ve had it 24-48 hours
Michelle:
until we can place the order for reactivation, we will not have a date
uslacker99:
ok
Michelle:
We will email you with the activation date
uslacker99:
is there any way to expedite this?
uslacker99:
I haven’t had service for 2 weeks.
Michelle:
Unfortunately there is not a way to speed up the process
uslacker99:
Are you sure?
uslacker99:
Is there an escalation process?
Michelle:
I am sorry but there is not a way
uslacker99:
You’re positive that there’s no faster way?
Michelle:
We are processing it as fast as we can
uslacker99:
Can I have your word on that?
Michelle:
We are moving as fast as we can
uslacker99:
okay then.
Michelle:
Is there anything else that I can help you with?
uslacker99:
nope

My picks for UFC 96 – Jackson vs. Jardine

March 6th, 2009

Main Card Bouts:

I’m picking the favorites on this card.

-Quinton Jackson  vs. Keith Jardine – easy – Jackson.

Much like how Wanderlei annihilated Jardine, I think he’ll suffer a similar fate. I don’t see how Jardine could run around and avoid him like he did Liddell. Jackson by KO.

-Gabriel Gonzaga (#8 Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Shane Carwin

Gonzaga. It looks like there are a few people out there picking Carwin, but I think that Gonzaga by submission here. I don’t think Carwin has submission defense yet.

For the rest of the fights, I’m just going to enjoy them with beer. I don’t know the fighters well enough.

-Matt Hammil vs. Mark Munoz
-Gray Maynard vs. Jim Miller
-Matt Brown vs. Pete Sell

Preliminary Bouts:
-Brandon Vera vs. Mike Patt
-Kendall Grove vs. Jason Day
-Tim Boetsch vs. Jason Brilz
-Tamdan McCrory vs. Ryan Madigan
-Aaron Riley vs. Shane Nelson

UFC 94 picks – JANUARY 31, 2009

January 12th, 2009

UFC 94: JANUARY 31, 2009
venue: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada

Main Card Bouts:
-Georges St. Pierre (#1 Welterweight in the World)* vs. B.J. Penn (#2 Lightweight in the World)*

It will be a great fight! They’ve both improved a lot. I’m leaning towards GSP, but I like Penn too. I can’t give either a big advantage. I’m really looking forward to this fight!

-Lyoto Machida (#4 Light Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Thiago Silva (#10 Light Heavyweight in the World)*

Machida. He’s fought better opposition, but Thiago has some good power.

-Karo Parisyan (#10 Welterweight in the World)* vs. Dong Hyun Kim

If Dong Hyun Kim doesn’t gas, I’m would go with him. Unfortunately, he did badly in his last fight and it was quite disappointing as I thought he had destroyed Matt Brown only for him to win a split decision due to the small gas tank. I’m picking Parisian.

-Nathan Diaz vs. Clay Guida

Guida – he probably won’t get submitted and he’s a workhorse. He just got caught against Huerta – I don’t think Diaz can beat him.

-Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones – who’s Jon Jones?

Preliminary Bouts:
-Jon Fitch (#2 Welterweight in the World)* vs. Akihiro Gono

Fitch. Gono isn’t that good. Fitch took a lot of people to the later rounds. Even GSP couldn’t finish him.

-Jake O’Brien vs. Christian Wellisch

Jake – Christian is a stand up fighter – I expect Jake to LnP the fight.
-Chris Wilson vs. John Howard – don’t know.
-Manny Gamburyan vs. Thiago Tavares

I’ll go with Manny. I don’t see Tavares being able to submit him and he’ll be able to just hold him down.
-Matt Arroyo vs. Dan Cramer – don’t know.

AFFLICTION 2 picks –

January 12th, 2009

AFFLICTION 2: JANUARY 24, 2009
venue: Honda Center in Anaheim, California

Pay-Per-View Bouts:
-Fedor Emelianenko  vs. Andrei Arlovski

Fedor – who can bet against him? He’s never lost!
-Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel

Barnett – I think he’ll take the fight to the ground and win.
-Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort

Lindland by lay and pray – boring fight of the night, I’d say. The Vitor of old hasn’t evolved. He might get a quick KO if he can catch Lindland, but I see Lindland controlling the fight on top.
-Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

Sokoudjou – Babalu will probably get KO’d unless he can keep Soko down.

-Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon – don’t know
-Paul Buentello vs. Kiril “Baby Fedor” Sidelnikov – don’t know

HDNet Bouts:
-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Vladimir Matyushenko

Lil’ Nog – Vlady I think is a heavyweight and will have a lot of trouble.
-Jay Hieron vs. Jason High – don’t know
-Mark Hominick vs. L.C. Davis – don’t know
-Antonio Duarte vs. Albert Rios – don’t know
-Brett Cooper vs. Patrick Speight – don’t know

My picks for UFC 93

January 12th, 2009

UFC 93: JANUARY 17, 2009
venue: O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland

Main Card Bouts:
-Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson

Dan – probably decision Dan – I think he’s got more power and is a better wrestler.
-Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Mark Coleman

Tough call. I’m going with Coleman – bigger, stronger, but dumber. We’ll see. If Coleman doesn’t get submitted, he’ll probably win.
-Denis Kang vs. Alan Belcher

Kang – he’s fought better opposition and Belcher’s lost to almost everyone good.

-Rousimar Palhares vs. Jeremy Horn

Palhares – I think he has better submission skills. As long as Horn’s been in the game, he still gets submitted quite a bit.
-Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle

Lytle will be able to take the fight to the ground and win. I don’t think he’ll be stupid enough to stand with Davis, but on the feet, I think Davis is better. Picking Lytle.

Preliminary Bouts:
-Martin Kampmann vs. Alexandre Barros – don’t know

-Ivan Serati vs. Thomasz Drwal – don’t know
-Tom Egan vs. John Hathaway – don’t know
-Nate Mohr vs. Denis Siver – don’t know

-Eric Schafer vs. Antonio Mendes

Picking Eric Schafer – I don’t think Antonio has much ground experience. Schafer’s a tough fight for a lot of people though he hasn’t beat top opposition yet.
