2 coins in my pocket = 35c. One of them is not a quarter…

How’s this possible?

The other one is a quarter! :)

Shokudo Japanese Restaurant & Bar – Honolulu, HI

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

This place is really friggin’ good! We were on Oahu just for 4 days or so and went to this place twice for dinner! Well, one of the reasons for this is because we knew that after leaving, we wouldn’t be able to revisit it very easily.

Of the two times we were there, we usually started with the premium Sake…don’t remember the exact name of it – it was one of the Junmais – the premium is the sweeter one though they’re both good. We’ve had the Sushi Pizza, which was pretty original and not bad. I’d prefer crispy seaweed, but it was still good. Unagi and Rice – the hot plate was very good – should wait until the rice gets harder before serving – rice from the bottom of the bowl is excellent. Yukari French Fries – taste like regular fries, but they’ve got a little twist – a little different taste that makes it just a little value add over some of the other places. The Rock Shrimp – it was good, but I didn’t find it was that good; better than most fried shrimps as the quality of the shrimp wasn’t too bad – you know how you can get fried shrimp from some places and they give you mostly batter – not this place. The Gyoza – awesome quality! Not too big, tasted good. Albacore Tuna Carpaccio – it was seared and was a little weird for me since I’m used to having it raw, but it was definitely good. Chicken Karaage with Spicy Tartar Sauce – the chicken was good; I didn’t need the tartar sauce. :) It’s optional. Stir-Fried Omelet Noodle – eh … friends thought it was really good. I thought it was okay – not something that I would have again because the tangy taste was a little weird for me. Albacore Tuna on Crispy Rice – definitely original, definitely good – must try. Beef Tataki with Balsamic Sushi – I liked the Tuna better, but this wasn’t bad – another original. For dessert, we tried the Chocolate and Cinnamon Honey Toasts and the baked banana. The honey toast is something that everyone gets. The baked banana was alright; tastes like your typical pan fried banana you can get at other places. Overall, A++ – I’ll definitely go back when I visit Hawaii again!

Shogun Picking Wanderlei Silva over Chuck Liddell

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

In reference to:
http://mmamovement.com/shogun-picking-w … k-liddell/

It’s hard to say. I think that Wanderlei’s got a shot, but I think that Liddell’s got enough power to take Wanderlei out. We’ll see. I definitely will take Machida over Sokoudjou though. If you saw his fight prior to those against Arona and Lil Nogueira, you’ll see that the guy that boxed him (don’t remember his name – look him up on Sherdog.com), actually outboxed him and knocked him out. Those two guys didn’t try to box, but tried to grapple him. I think that Machida takes this as long as he doesn’t get hit and he’s so elusive that I don’t think he will.

Ibarra Doesn’t Think Silva or Shogun Can Handle Rampage

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

I agree with Ibarra. I think Page will take them both. Page had a good excuse for losing against Silva both times. Also, the rules are different in Pride. That’s why Crocop was able to win more often – they stood the fighters up more. Rampage can hold Silva down and beat him by GnP or LnP whatever you call it in the UFC where he couldn’t do it in Pride. I think Henderson had a better chance, but he lost too.

Sushi Dai is way better than Sushi Yamato in Tsukiji (Japan)

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

It’s really ridiculous how different the two sushi places are in terms of service while they’re right next to each other and look the same as well. They both have similar amounts of traffic as well.

Here’s a good review of Sushi Dai:
http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides … 4654633758

Another review for Sushi Dai:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/As … -BR-1.html

Sushi Dai had better service as even though we did the set (omakase), we were asked if there was anything that we didn’t eat. (I don’t like octopus or uni.)
The egg in at Sushi Dai was hot and fresh where the one at Yamato was cold and looked like it sat there for a while.
At Sushi Dai, we were given the items one at a time and told what they were. At Yamato, they just kept throwing stuff in front of us making it feel rushed.
At Sushi Dai, we were offered different tastes for example, the choice between salt and soy sauce and a citrus flavored piece whereas at Yamato, they were all soy sauce flavored.
At Sushi Dai, I was able to use chopsticks to eat all of my pieces. At Yamato, my pieces kept falling apart.

Wasabi & Ginger – San Francisco, CA

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Wasabi & Ginger
2299 Van Ness Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94109

This is yet another Chinese owned Japanese restaurant. The food isn’t bad.

Spider roll was awesome +10

Nabeyaki Udon was okay +5

Raw fish was okay, but not fresh as I thought it would be according to other reviews -5

Bathroom was typical, but faucet was broken -1

No “irashaimase” (Welcome at the door) -1

Waitress didn’t know what shichimi was (flavor for Udon) -1

Boss was around, so service was good +5

Free ice cream! +5

So overall, I’d say, this place is pretty good. It deserves 4 stars.

Speed Scrabble® – what an awesome game!

Monday, September 4th, 2006

I’ve been a Scrabble fan for a long time. Because I didn’t do well playing it as a kid, I figured, I’m a grown-up now – the same handicap I had back then no longer applies, so I’m going to learn and be the best I could at it. I think a lot of the skills I learned playing Boggle helped me in Scrabble as well.

Anyways, a good friend’s wife, Barbara, just introduced me to a game called Speed Scrabble. Here’s a link to the rules:

http://www.mrkland.com/games/spscrab.htm

We played pretty much that way except that we started with 4 tiles instead of 7.

I was instantly impressed after learning how much faster the game goes and how the flexibility of being able to rearrange tiles on the fly. There’s obviously a different strategy in playing the game and I’m probably going to play this game more often.

Living vs. Existing – Michael E. Gerber

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

“The difference between great people and everyone else is that

great people create their lives actively, while everyone else is

created by their lives, passively waiting to see where life takes

them next. The difference between the two is the difference between

living fully and just existing.”

It’s a pretty good restaurant – pretty good food. I went with Indians and they claim it to be pretty authentic.

How to get USB devices to work in Linux or the ESX console

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Here is how I’ve gotten a couple of cdroms / usb memory sticks / hard drives to work.

1) modprobe usb-ohci
Or
modprobe usb-uhci
(one of them should work, one may fail)

2) modprobe usb-storage

3) tail /var/log/messages
Or
dmesg
and you should see something like this:
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver…
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: Vendor: SanDisk Model: Cruzer Mini Rev: 0.4
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: scsi_register_host starting finish
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: SCSI device sdb: 2001888 512-byte hdwr sectors (976 MB)
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: sdb: Write Protect is off
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: sdb: sdb1 Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: scsi_register_host done with finish
Feb 8 14:50:56 supp15 kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.

4) Now that we know that it’s sdb1,
Create the mountpoint directory:
mkdir /mnt/usb
Mount the device:
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb

That’s it. Your files should be in /mnt/usb. To check, just run ls /mnt/usb

In a case that you don’t have /dev/sdb1 there, which is what happened to me once with a Dell CDrom, I had to mknod the device.
After plugging the usb cdrom into the machine, /var/log/messages showed:

date hostname kernel: sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 10x/10x cd/rw …..

Unfortunately, if you type: “mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/mountpoint”, it will say:
“mount: special device /dev/sr0 does not exist” and that doesn’t do us any good. So what I did after that was:
cd /dev
mknod sr0 b 11 0

With that, /dev/sr0 existed and hence I was able to run:
mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/mountpoint

or, I could run:
ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom
and run:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/mountpoint

That’s it!
